Flooring guide
Durable hardwood floors.
Hardwood looks better with age and, looked after properly, lasts for decades. Here's what makes one floor tougher than another.
The wood itself
Some species are harder than others. Oak, maple and hickory are among the most popular for busy homes because they rate high on the Janka hardness scale, which measures how well wood resists dents and wear.
Solid or engineered
Solid hardwood is one piece of wood. Engineered hardwood is a real hardwood top layer on a layered core. Both are durable; engineered copes better with changes in humidity and temperature.
Finish and installation
A good finish protects against scratches, spills and sunlight, and a careful installation keeps the floor flat and tight.
Making it last
- Put rugs or runners in the busiest areas.
- Sweep or vacuum often to clear grit.
- Wipe up spills straight away and mop with a damp, not wet, mop.
- Consider refinishing a solid floor every 7 to 10 years.
