How to care for hardwood floors.
Hardwood floors can last for decades with the right care. Here's what to do and how often.
Cleaning
1. Dust or sweep daily
Dust and grit act like sandpaper under your feet. A soft-bristle broom or a microfibre dust mop keeps them off the floor.
2. Vacuum weekly
Use a hardwood-floor attachment, or a setting with the rotating brush turned off, to lift dirt out of the gaps without scratching.
3. Mop monthly
A slightly damp mop with a cleaner made for hardwood is enough. Wring the mop out well: standing water can warp wood.
Protecting the floor
- Mats at every door stop dirt and water being tracked in.
- Felt pads under furniture legs prevent scratches when chairs and tables move.
- Steady humidity between 35% and 55% keeps the wood from shrinking or swelling.
